'Tearing down walls' focus of MSU Unity Week activities

STARKVILLE, Miss.--Hurtful words people say to each other can build human barriers, many that last forever.

With those ideas in mind, several groups at Mississippi State are planning the April 7 construction of a temporary cinderblock wall to display some of mankind's most hurtful words and phrases.

Participation in the "Writing on the Wall" project by university students and employees, along with any interested members of the general public, will take place 5-8 p.m. in front of the Colvard Student Union.

Three days later on the 10th, members of the campus and area communities will be invited back for a 12:15 p.m. gathering to help tear down the 30-foot-long, five-foot-tall display.

"This is something that everyone can see," said sophomore Autumn C. Nourse of Huntsville, Ala., president of the sponsoring Residence Hall Association. "It makes you see in print all of the different kinds of verbal barriers people say."

The project is part of MSU Unity Week activities organized to celebrate multiculturalism on campus. A barbecue, silent auction and Native-American "pow-wow" make up the other planned events.

Joining the RHA as Unity Week co-sponsors are the Division of Student Affairs and Richard Holmes Cultural Diversity Center.
