STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Tuesday [Nov. 1] public program at Mississippi State will focus on the research capabilities and benefits of a new facility now under construction to house a powerful magnetic resonance imaging machine.

To begin at 5:30 p.m., presentations in the Bost Extension Center auditorium will feature representatives of the university's Institute for Neurocognitive Science and Technology and Tupelo-based Premier Radiology who are collaborating to bring the new research technologies to the Golden Triangle area.

A 5 p.m. reception will precede the approximately hour-long information-sharing program.

The MSU-Premier partnership currently is constructing a 20,000-square-foot facility near the intersection of state Highway 182 and Stark Road.

When complete, the building will house a 3 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine that will enable university researchers to better understand how the human brain is organized and how it functions on multiple levels simultaneously. The equipment it contains also will have veterinary medical applications.

A program focusing on human reaction with complex systems such as aircraft, weapons and automobiles is among investigative projects already initiated by institute scientists.

During the Tuesday evening meeting, various speakers will highlight work currently involving more than 20 MSU faculty members in areas such as biology, psychology, computer science, biological engineering, and veterinary medicine. Premier representatives also will discuss their involvement in the project and the facility's clinical applications.
