For Houston Everett, Mississippi State is a family affair in more ways than one.

The junior communication major from Magee is the grandson of George Thomas "Tommy" Everett, III, MSU's 2013 National Alumnus of the Year, and the son of John and Patty Everett. With so many family members who are MSU alumni, it's no wonder Everett eats, breathes and sleeps MSU.

Everett has attended MSU sporting events throughout his life and is an avid Bulldog fan, regardless of the sport. Whether it's football, basketball or baseball, he will probably be in the stands, cheering on the team.
And as a student with a disability who has overcome enormous obstacles, Everett uses athletics as a learning tool and a way to stay positive.

"In sports and in life, even if we face insurmountable odds, we need to remember it's not how you start, it's how you finish that's important," he said.

Everett also is extremely family-oriented, attributing his grandfather as his main inspiration for attending MSU and his parents as his role models. He views the university community as one big family, something he loves to promote as one of the university's Roadrunners.

"Every person here has a deep love for State and it shows. Getting the chance to tell visitors about my experiences and seeing their faces light up is one of the best parts of being a Roadrunner," he said.

Everett said coming to school here has helped foster his independence and taught him how to work with different types of people. He strives to always do his best, not just for himself, but for others, too.

"Just because you have a disability, it doesn't mean you can't accomplish your goals," he said. "I put my whole heart into everything I do, so I can be a light for other people, like others have been for me."

And while he said he wouldn't be the same without this university, the university wouldn't be the same without him and his enthusiasm. Everett sums up the university like this: "You live, you love and you experience Mississippi State."
