JaNae' Taylor chose her career path after a discussion with a teacher in the 11th grade. She and her teacher disagreed on the definition of a "normal" person.

Taylor, a staff clinician and diversity advocate and liaison coordinator at MSU's Student Counseling Services, said she appreciates the responsibility associated with working with mental health issues on a university campus.

Recently reflecting on that conversation she had back in high school, she says she now has no idea what constitutes "normal."

"It makes much more sense to use the word 'typical' or 'average.'" Taylor explained there is a stigma attached to the "normal."

Her choice to pursue counseling in her career seems to be a good fit.

"This is an opportunity to reach young people while they come into their own adult identity," the Mobile, Ala., native said. "So many important decisions will be made while students are on our campus."

Helping students when they experience some of life's challenges is her mission, Taylor said. Student Counseling Services is available to help students with problems related to stress, anxiety, depression, grief, and other mental health issues.

The center also works to educate the community about mental health wellness and promote a healthy campus environment through the work of the diversity advocate and liaison coordinator. Taylor said diversity plays an important role in students' university experience.

"Learning about people who are different from you adds so much to your own life," she said.
