STARKVILLE, Miss.--The Mississippi State communication department is announcing its eighth annual golf tournament to raise funds for university scholarships.
To be held Oct. 3 at the Institute of Golf, the four-person scramble will begin at 10:30 a.m. with registration and snacks. The institute is located at the MSU Golf Course on State Highway 182 East.
Open to players at all skill levels, this year's event will be limited to 120 participants. Registration is required and may be completed at www.comm.msstate.edu.
A $100-per-person charge covers the green fee, golf cart rental, lunch, range balls and entry to the putting contest. A silent auction also will be held throughout the day. Other details are provided at the above-listed website.
The tournament takes place the day prior to MSU's home football game with Texas A&M University. In addition to supporting communication majors, the friendly competition was created to give participants opportunities to socialize with employees, alumni and friends of the land-grant institution and one of its largest academic departments that currently enrolls more than 560 majors.
"Proceeds specifically support our Lora Defore Memorial Scholarships that enable student internships around the country," said department head John Forde. "Nearly a dozen students have benefitted over a two-year period."
A member of the communication faculty for nearly two decades DeFore died in 2009 following a long battle with cancer. Beyond teaching full-time, she coordinated both the department's public relations academic concentration and the internship program.
In addition to public relations, the department's other concentrations include broadcasting, communication studies, journalism, and theatre.
