STARKVILLE, Miss.--Teachers across the state may earn continuing education units through a series of professional development workshops being offered by Mississippi State's Center for Continuing Education.
The one-day sessions for kindergarten-12th grade teachers are taking place June 18, 19, 26 and July 9 at the Hunter Henry Center on the university campus. The location is subject to change based on the numbers of registrants.
Each workshop has a $115 registration fee that includes lunch. They include:
--Tuesday, June 18, "Informative Writing for Grades K-5" and Wednesday, June 19, "Informative Writing for Grades 6-12." Both held 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., these sessions will focus on strategies for effectively teaching informative responses writing to students. How students' ability to write informatively is measured on the Common Core assessment will be given special attention.
--Wednesday, June 26, "The 'D' Word: The Elephant in the Classroom." This 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. workshop will seek to debunk myths about dyslexia, while providing appropriate remediation strategies and evaluations. Helping decipher dyslexia law and providing assistance in determining appropriate accommodations for both elementary and high school students also will be covered. A question-and-answer period with experts in the field is part of the session.
--Tuesday, July 9, "Close Analytical Reading for Grades K-5." This 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. session deals with the best strategies for motivating students to read analytically and for a purpose.
