STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State students are dominating the 2012 Mississippi Collegiate Art Competition.

Current majors and recent graduates of the university's College of Architecture, Art and Design recently brought home top Juror's Awards in five of 13 categories.

Held at Jackson State University, this year's competition involved entries from 10 Mississippi universities. MSU also had the most works accepted to the exhibition: 37 of a total 136.

Judging was based solely on the image; artists' names and schools attended were not announced in advance.

"This affirms the fact that MSU is very competitive when it comes to what is taught in our curriculum and how the professors are teaching," said Robert Ring, art department exhibit coordinator.

"It also shows just how highly a qualified judge thinks of the work that is coming from our students," he added.

Each of the 13 judging categories represented a separate medium such as painting, drawing, photography, or ceramics, among others.

The MSU honorees include (by hometown):

CLINTON--Fall 2011 drawing graduate Tyler A. Robinson, for his bamboo stool sculptures; and senior Whitten Sabbatini, a senior in photography, for his photo "Untitled 7."

COLUMBUS--Marion E. Morrow, a junior in graphic design, for her design of an album cover for the country music group Rascal Flatts;

NATCHEZ--Fall 2011 print making graduate Samuel L. "Sam" Brown, for his print "Bar Babies"; and

STARKVILLE--Thomas M. McBroom, a sophomore in drawing, for his drawing "Color Still-Life."

Melissa Harshman, printmaking professor at the University of Georgia, was juror.
