STARKVILLE, Miss.--The Institute for the Humanities Distinguished Lecture Series returns for the spring semester at Mississippi State Jan. 27 with a presentation from noted Princeton University professor and author David Bell.
An expert on the early modern history of France, Bell will discuss his latest book, "The First Total War: Napoleon's Europe and the Birth of Warfare as We Know It." The free, public program is at 4 p.m. in the university's McCool Hall atrium.
Prior to joining the staff at Princeton where he earned a doctorate, Bell taught at Yale and Johns Hopkins. In addition to holding the Andrew W. Mellon Chair in the Humanities, he was dean of faculty in the School of Arts and Sciences.
Bell also has written two other books, "The Cult of the Nation in France: Inventing Nationalism, 1680-1800;" and "Lawyers and Citizens: The Making of a Political Elite in Old Regime France," as well as numerous short writings and essays.
The university's Distinguished Lecture Series is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, the offices of Research and Economic Development and the Provost. The program features scholars, writers and artists from around the world.
