STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State officials are urging that students be vigilant in taking precautions for personal safety after a reported mugging Tuesday [Oct. 19] on the edge of campus.
A female student walking toward the privately owned Campus Trails apartments east of campus said she was approached at approximately 3:30 p.m. by a male who grabbed her, threatened her with a weapon, and robbed her before leaving on foot.
The incident subsequently was reported about 5 p.m. to campus police, who are investigating, said Dean of Students Thomas Bourgeois. The suspect was described as a dark-skinned black male, approximately 6 feet tall and weighing 200-220 pounds. He also was said to be wearing a long red T-shirt, baggy jeans, white tennis shoes, and a nylon black bandana.
Bourgeois reminds those walking on campus to monitor their surroundings carefully, be cautious if walking alone even during daylight hours, and report suspicious incidents to the MSU Police Department.
The MSU Police Department provides a 24-hour, 7-day escort service for students and visitors to and from locations on campus.
"We urge anyone with information about this incident to contact the MSU Police at 662-325-2121," Bourgeois said.
