To recognize the first U.S. National Fossil Day on Wednesday [Oct. 13], MSU's Dunn-Seiler Museum will host a Fossil Extravaganza from 6-8 p.m. Fun activities, tours of the museum, and refreshments are all part of the free, public event in Hilbun Hall, Room 108.
The Fossil Extravaganza coincides with the opening of the museum's new display on Mississippi's Geologic Past which opened Oct. 11. The exhibit welcomes back its very own Mississippi dinosaur bones, which have been on loan for research. In addition to the dinosaur bones, the new display focuses on the unique creatures that once lived in the state, including a local extinct crocodile, whales, and much more.
For Mississippi school children, the Dunn-Seiler Museum is sponsoring an art and writing contest for students in grades 1-8. Students are encouraged to write a story about Mississippi's dinosaur, the hadrosaur, or re-create one with recycled materials.
The art competition is open to grades 1-3, 4-6, and 7-8, while the writing contest is open to students in grades 4-6 and 7-8. Winners will receive fossil kits in addition to their award plaques.
