STARKVILLE, Miss.--Junior Katie Tully of Long Beach is the winner of Mississippi State's 2010 Homecoming Poster Design Contest, with her prize-winning piece becoming the official artwork for the university's annual celebration scheduled for Saturday [Oct. 23].
Her entry for this year's homecoming theme "Wrap It in Maroon and White" is a pastel drawing of a gift box filled with MSU memorabilia, including a Bulldog puppy, cowbell, pom pons, football and more.
Thomas Sellers, president of the sponsoring MSU Student Association, said, "With homecoming week finally here, it's exciting to see this poster exemplify the event theme."
"This year's poster and the contest add to the spirit of homecoming, just as the previous ones have done since the contest was started three years ago," Sellers said.
A limited number of signed and numbered prints is available to purchase for $15 each on the first floor of Colvard Union or from the MSU Student Association office on the Union's third floor. Homecoming T-shirts and copies of last year's poster also are available while supplies last.
Tully said she immediately thought of a gift box when she heard the theme and then knew she had to connect this with the whole homecoming experience.
"I used pastels because I thought this medium would be best with the maroon and white colors and the paper I was using," said the art major, whose emphasis is graphic design.
Tully, the daughter of Steve and Sandy Tully, received a $400 Barnes and Noble gift card for her efforts, with the winning creation displayed in Lee Hall's Student Affairs Gallery in the Dean of Students' Office.
