STARKVILLE, Miss.--Special daytime concerts for children in grades K-5 will culminate Oct. 1 with a 7:30 p.m. general admission performance by the Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony Association.
Titled "Folksong Fantasia," the evening event in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Lee Hall will feature selections from Vaughn Williams and Aaron Copland, as well as Brazilian composer Camargo Guarnieri and Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo.
The concert also will include a special arrangement of 10 American folksongs by MSU music department head Michael Brown, symphony conductor.
"Folksong Fantasia" is the second in the series of concerts for the 2010-11 season by the symphony, now in its 42nd year.
Three performances geared especially for children will be presented at 8:45 a.m., 10:20 a.m., and 1 p.m. in an annual event that draws thousands of youngsters from around the area.
The evening performance, under the direction of Brown, will feature guest artists that include piano soloist Rosangela Sebba, a member of the MSU music faculty; and guitarist John Oeth, a sophomore music major. Also featured will be the winner of the music department's 2010 concerto/aria contest.
Selections for the event include Williams' "English Folksong Suite;" Copland's "Variations on a Shaker Melody" and "Saturday Night Waltz" from "Rodeo;" Guarnieri's "Choro para Piano e Orquestra;" and Rodrigo's "Fantasia para un gentilhombre."
Oeth will perform "Espanoleta y Fanfare de la Caballeria de Napoles."
