STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Fulbright Scholar and authority on Vietnam will discuss the Southeast Asian country's relationship with the United States and other topics during a June 7 program at Mississippi State.
Mark A. Ashwill, former country director of the Institute of International Education in Vietnam, comes to campus as guest of the university's Office of International Program Development. Open to all, his 12:30-2 p.m. presentation, "Vietnam in the Post-War Era," takes place in the Swalm Chemical Engineering Building's Eastman Auditorium.
"Dr. Ashwill also will touch on Vietnam as an 'American fantasy,' or at least some of the reasons behind America's failure to overcome this part of its recent past," said Stephen Cottrell.
"We encourage people to take advantage of this opportunity to become more informed about our world," added the OIPD's assistant director.
In 2003, Ashwill received the first Fulbright Senior Specialist scholarship to Vietnam after the country resumed diplomatic relations with the U.S. He has resided in the capital of Hanoi since 2005, the same year his book, "Vietnam Today: A Guide to a Nation at the Crossroads" (Intercultural Press, 2005), was published.
