STARKVILLE, Miss.--A free community SkyWarn training session will be offered March 24 at Mississippi State.
The 5 p.m. program in 202 Hilbun Hall is sponsored by the East Mississippi Chapter of the National Weather Association and American Meteorological Society. The chapter is a student organization of the university's geosciences department and its atmospheric sciences academic programs.
Training will be led by department alumnus Jared S. Allen of the National Weather Service Office in Jackson. A 2007 magna cum laude graduate who completed his master's degree last year, the former Brandon student also will discuss NWS missions and operations.
At the midweek program's conclusion, interested persons in attendance may be certified as NSW storm spotters.
Pizza and refreshments will be provided.
Developed in the late 1960s, SkyWarn is a cooperative effort between the NWS and communities in every state. In addition to an emphasis on local storm spotters, the program stresses the effective receipt and distribution of developing weather information. (For more, visit www.skywarn.org/about.htm.)
