STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Mississippi State aerospace engineering major is being recognized with a 2010 Outstanding Senior Award by the Mississippi Engineering Society.
Wade M. Spurlock of Starkville, who maintains a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in the university's Bagley College of Engineering, was honored both for his academic achievement and work outside the classroom. He is one of three Mississippi students selected this year for the MES honor.
Founded in 1939, the state organization is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers.
Undergraduate coordinator Robert Green said Spurlock earlier was selected as the college's top aerospace engineering major for his senior, junior and freshman years.
In addition to class work, Spurlock serves as captain of "Team Xipiter," a 17-member unmanned aircraft systems student group that earned the 2008 Best Flight Award of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International. Also that year, he was invited by NASA to its highly selective Langley Aerospace Research Summer Scholars program.
Additionally, Spurlock is a member of the MSU club soccer team, and has traveled to Mexico to teach English as a second language.
Donna Reece, the college's associate dean of academics, said Spurlock's time management skills, coupled with his decision to maximize his collegiate experience, have helped him excel over the years.
"Wade has learned the importance of time management and perfected the skill to give himself the advantage of becoming a more productive and accomplished student," Reese said. "His natural talent and abilities combined with his work ethic and dedication will make him an outstanding engineer."
Spurlock, whose future plans include a doctoral degree in aerospace engineering, is the son of Stan and Ann Spurlock, both MSU faculty members.
