STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Pulitzer Prize winner and former U.S. poet laureate will read from his works April 6 at Mississippi State.
Ted Kooser, a Presidential Professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is the latest guest in the 2009-10 Institute for the Humanities Distinguished Lecture Series.
The free public program begins at 4 p.m. in the McComas Hall main theater. A book signing and reception follow in the lobby.
Also an essayist whose prose, like his poetry, is praised for clarity, precision and accessibility, the Iowa native served as the U. S. Poet Laureate 2004-06. It was during this time his book, "Delights & Shadows" (Copper Canyon Press, 2004), won a Pulitzer for poetry.
Kooser holds degrees from Iowa State University and Nebraska. He worked for many years in the life insurance business before retiring in 1999 as a vice president. (For more, visit www.tedkooser.net/.)
Over the years, his works have appeared in major popular and literary publications, as well as textbooks and anthologies used at secondary-higher education institutions around the country.
The Institute for the Humanities is part of the university's College of Arts and Sciences.
The English department and Shackouls Honors College also are sponsors of the program.
