STARKVILLE, Miss.--Set to open this fall, Mississippi State's newest residence hall also will be home to the university's Global Leadership Continuum and students in the expanding Day One Leadership program.

Day One program participants may choose to live in the four-story South Hall--now under construction--or be accommodated in adjacent Rice and Cresswell residence halls, whichever best fits their needs, according to continuum director Cade Smith.

"The close proximity will allow us to more effectively assist incoming freshmen students in their transition both to college life and our Day One program," Smith added.

Day One is a collaborative, 16-week program designed to help freshmen develop as leaders on campus and beyond their higher educations. Action teams that initiate and complete community service projects and assist local agencies are a key component of this experience.

Other GLC programs include:

--Appalachian Leadership Honors for sophomores, juniors, and seniors;

--Summer Leadership Honors, a weeklong workshop for community college students; and

--Borderless Hosts, which pairs new international students with local residents to help the recent arrivals successfully acclimate into the community.

When completed during the summer, South Hall will be home to approximately 180 Day One students.

"Mississippi State is committed to its tradition of instilling its students with the ideals of diversity, citizenship, leadership, and service," Smith said. "This new collaborative residential environment will greatly enhance that process."
