A program unveiling research, technological and educational advances sponsored by the Mississippi State University-led Northern Gulf Institute takes place during a weeklong gathering that begins Monday [Oct. 26] at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center in Biloxi.

NGI, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration cooperative serving the Gulf of Mexico region, is marking its third anniversary with an exhibit at the Ocean09 international conference co-sponsored by the national Marine Technology Society and IEEE (formerly the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).

Media are invited to visit the NGI booth to view demonstrations and speak with scientists and program staff about current and upcoming research projects that support the region.

"This is the world's leading conference and exhibition on marine science, technology and engineering," said NGI director David Shaw, a Giles Distinguished Professor at MSU.

"Marine Technology for our Future: Global and Local Challenges" is the 2009 conference theme.

The NGI is a partnership of five academic institutions and NOAA. In addition to MSU, they include the University of Southern Mississippi, Florida State and Louisiana State universities, and Alabama's Dauphin Island Sea Laboratory.

The institute develops, operates and maintains integrated research and transition programs. It also supports high school outreach activities, including e-Missions Operations Montserrat, which provides hands-on learning experience to six Gulf Coast high school groups interested in mathematics and science.
