The Dean of Students Office at MSU announced today that a reported Sunday evening purse-snatching near Sessums Hall on campus did not occur.
Based on a police investigation, the female student who reported the incident now is being charged with filing a false police report, said Dean Thomas Bourgeois.
"Filing a false report is a serious charge," Bourgeois said, adding that conviction can result in up to $1000.00 fine and up to one year in prison.
Bourgeois said false reports are dangerous to the general campus because they can unnecessarily divert valuable police resources, among other reasons.
"We treat false reports as seriously as we treat crime reports," Bourgeois said.
