STARKVILLE, Miss.--Friday [March 6] is the nomination deadline for the 2009 Outstanding Woman Awards, an annual recognition program of the President's Commission on the Status of Women at Mississippi State.

Online forms should be completed by 5 p.m. Of the 10 categories, eight are presented to university employees, while the other two honor women from the community and state.

"The awards represent all categories of work at MSU and we want to recognize each woman's achievements through this program," said commission chair Nicole Rader, an assistant professor of sociology.

Rader, a member for four years, said the PCSW has worked for more than three decades on issues that affect a variety of women. Among others, they include recent breast cancer awareness and child care support projects, and the recurring Women's History Month observance in March.

"Each year, we select an issue that can be researched so we can inform and make the public aware of women's topics on campus," she explained.

PCSW was established on campus during the administration of President James D. McComas, MSU's 14th chief executive (1976-85). Lillian Carter of Plains, Ga., mother of then-president Jimmy Carter, was the first to receive the group's top honor.
