Predictions for strong thunderstorms are altering Mississippi State's plans for a Friday [Feb. 27] celebration of the university's 131st birthday celebration.

"There's an 80-90 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms tomorrow, and we don't want to endanger anyone during this major outdoor event," said Jimmy Abraham, executive director of the sponsoring MSU Alumni Association.

Most of the scheduled Drill Field events will be held at a later date.

"We will be cutting our traditional birthday cake in the Dawg House lounge of the Colvard Student Union," Abraham said. "We invite everyone to stop by 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for a piece of free cake provided by MSU Dining Services.

"We'll also begin planning a larger, belated celebration during the week leading up to Super Bulldog Weekend," he added.

SBW, MSU's spring homecoming weekend, is scheduled April 17-19.

The alumni association has joined with Starkville-based Cadence Bank for the past three years to hold the annual birthday party. Last year's event drew more than 2,500 participants to the center-campus assembly.

"The celebration has continued to grow," Abraham said. "Because it's a great opportunity to celebrate all that Mississippi State means to our community and state, we've always held the event during a time that everyone can safely enjoy outdoors."
