Contact: Robbie Ward

A group of high school teachers are at Mississippi State this week to learn more about the U.S. economy and business ethics, among other topics, during a special Tuesday-Thursday program organized, in part, by the university's Center for Economic Education and Financial Literacy.

Titled "Focus on the Economy: Contemporary Topics in Economics," the workshop is taking place in the first-floor Rogers Auditorium [Room 100] of McCool Hall, home of the College of Business and Industry.

While not public events, workshop sessions are open to interested members of the news media.

At 12:30 p.m. Tuesday [the 17th], Michael R. Pakko, an economic research officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, will speak. At 10:15 a.m. Thursday [the 19th], Jonathan B. Wight, an authority on the ethics of capitalism, will be featured.

Pakko, who holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Rochester, is a recognized specialist on monetary policies. Wight, a faculty member at the University of Richmond, is the author of "Adam Smith and Greed," winner of the Journal of Private Enterprise's 2006 John Templeton Prize.

Now in its fifth year, the workshop is designed to help high school teachers improve economics instruction in their classroom.

In addition to the MSU center--a part of the department of finance and economics--the summer program is co-sponsored by the Jackson-based Mississippi Council on Economic Education, University of Southern Mississippi's Center for Economic Education, Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Mississippi, and International Paper Foundation.
