STARKVILLE, Miss.--Middle and high school students with a year of band experience are being invited to attend Mississippi State's annual summer band camp.

June 20 is the registration deadline for the July 6-11 residential and day camping program that emphasizes concert and jazz instruction, as well as small chamber ensembles.

Specific training is provided in conducting, organizational leadership, music theory, marching fundamentals, color guard, dance, and percussion. Private lessons also are offered.

"Our main focus is to give students a range of experiences that help them improve their musical skills," said Elva Kaye Lance, MSU director of bands. "We also work very hard to provide the training in a fun and relaxed atmosphere."

Lance said last year's camp attracted some 150 students from around the state and region. Each year, campus staff members are joined as instructors by veteran middle and high school band directors, she added.

Supervised housing will be available in campus residence halls, with MSU students serving as counselors.

Costs to attend are $295 for residential campers (includes tuition, meals and housing) and $125 for day campers (does not cover meals). There is an $85 application fee.

Application forms may be downloaded at http://www.msstate.edu/org/band or by telephoning the band office at 662-325-2713.
