STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Mississippi State computer science and engineering professor will serve as an evaluator for a European research group.

Ioana Banicescu is beginning a five-year term on the European Research Council's advanced research grant evaluation panel. She is a faculty member in the computer science and engineering department and a researcher at the university's Center for Computational Sciences.

Established early last year, the ERC works to promote major cutting-edge research in the sciences and humanities across the continent. Its advanced investigator grants provide funding to researchers who already have established themselves as world-class, independent research leaders in their own right, according to a council spokesperson.

Banicescu, who holds master's and doctoral degrees from the Polytechnic University of New York, will serve on the 12-member computer science and informatics panel. She also is an engineering graduate of the Polytechnic University of Bucharest in Romania.

Since joining the MSU faculty in 1996, she has received a number of awards, including the National Science Foundation's Early Career and Information Technology Research awards.

Banicescu's department is a unit of the Bagley College of Engineering, which also has honored her with its Outstanding Faculty Research and Hearin Professor of Engineering awards.
