MEDIA ADVISORY: VERTEX facility opening ceremony

Contact: Sammy McDavid

Mississippi State's High-Performance Computing Collaboratory will hold a grand-opening ceremony Thursday [April 3] for its new Virtual Environment for Real-Time Exploration, or VERTEX, facility.

The 10 a.m. program will be held in Room 30 of the HPC Building in the Cochran Research Park, which is located north of campus across state Highway 182.

Following brief welcoming remarks by Kirk Schulz, MSU vice president for research and economic development, a summary of the facility's capabilities will be provided by Robert Moorhead, deputy director of the land-grant institution's GeoResources Institute.

Demonstrations will be offered 10:20 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

The new facility provides MSU scientists with the capability to create various types of virtual environments. Its modeling software enables in-depth investigations in a variety of research fields, including hurricane behavior, forest management, architecture, and design development for vehicles, aircraft and submarines, among others.

The collaboratory is a coalition of MSU research centers and groups that share the common goal of advancing computational science and engineering through the application of high-performance computing.
