Mississippi State: 130 candles and counting

STARKVILLE, Miss.--A campus birthday party Feb. 28 will mark the 130th birthday of Mississippi State University.

On that day in 1878, the Mississippi Legislature voted to establish the Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College under provisions set forth in the federal Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890. Today, Mississippi State--its modern name--is among more than 75 land-grant institutions spread among the 50 states.

Sponsored by the MSU Alumni Association and Starkville-based Cadence Bank, the third annual birthday celebration will take place 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on the campus-center Drill Field. The event is free and open to all students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends.

"We can think of no better way to commemorate this special occasion than by gathering members of the Bulldog family for a party on this historic ground," said association executive director Jimmy Abraham, who also is associate vice president for development and alumni.

Musical entertainment will be provided by "BARK," the volunteer campus rock band fronted by President Robert H. "Doc" Foglesong.

In case of inclement weather, all activities will be moved to the east-side lower level of Davis Wade Stadium.
