Visiting entomologist to discuss pest mole crickets at MSU Friday

STARKVILLE, Miss.--A University of Florida entomologist will lead a public discussion on the biological control of pest mole crickets Friday [Oct. 7] at Mississippi State.

J. Howard Frank's lecture, "Pest Mole Crickets Down, Not Yet Out: The Role of Biological Control," will take place 1-2 p.m. in the Clay Lyle Entomology Building auditorium (Room 117).

A U.S. Department of Agriculture facility, the building is located just west of the Delta Gamma sorority house on Robert Jones Boulevard.

The fall guest lecturer's appearance is sponsored by the university's department of entomology and plant pathology and the Entomology and Plant Pathology Club, a student organization that promotes knowledge about insects and plant diseases.

Frank's research specialty is the biological control of various pest insects through the use of parasitoids, predators or pathogens--particularly against Scapteriscus mole crickets (pests of turf, pasture grasses and vegetables) and Metamasius callizona (pest of bromeliads).

Frank completed a bachelor's degree in zoology from Durham University in 1963 and a doctorate in entomology from Oxford University in 1967. Both institutions are located in England.
