'ServSafe' certification offered by Mississippi State

Contact: Maridith Geuder

Aug. 18 is the registration deadline for a special course at Mississippi State in "best safety practices" for employees of food service and related commercial establishments.

Titled "ServSafe," the three-hour sessions will be held on Monday and Thursday evenings during August and September in the university's Memorial Hall. Completion of the training will enable participants to meet required state certification.

The course is designed specifically for food-handling employees of restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and day care centers, among others, said Amy P. Vickery of MSU's Division of Continuing Education. State law requires at least one person at each establishment to hold the certification, she added.

The 6-9 p.m. classes will meet Aug. 25 and 28 and Sept. 4, 8 and 11. Rebecca Kelly, a registered dietitian with a doctorate in nutrition, is the instructor.

The $150 course fee includes a detailed manual to be kept by each student.
