A free July 24 workshop at Mississippi State will train parents and other caregivers in methods for modifying toys to accommodate children with disabilities.
July 10 is the registration deadline for the second "Christmas in July," which is sponsored by the university's T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability. The program takes place 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at the campus facility, which is located at the intersection of Hardy and Morrill roads.
Part of a national effort coordinated by the Toy Adaptation Network for Children with Disabilities in Scranton, Pa., "Christmas in July" focuses on selecting and making both low- and high-technology additions to a variety of play equipment. The Martin Center is the only network member in Mississippi.
"Play should be fun and free of barriers," said Martin Center occupational therapist Jill Ethridge. "Often an adjustment as simple as adding a dowel or a different switch to a toy may provide access a child wouldn't otherwise enjoy."
Established in 1996, the center provides comprehensive research and clinical services for persons with all types of disabilities. The staff includes rehabilitation engineers, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and education specialists.
To register for Christmas in July, telephone (662) 325-1028. For more information on the workshop, visit the center Web site at http://www.tkmartin.msstate.edu/.
