Guest Artist Series begins 1999-2000 season of music

Flutist Karen Garrison of Auburn University will highlight an Oct. 7 recital at Mississippi State University.

The 7:30 p.m. program in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall also features Auburn pianist Joseph Stephenson and guitarist Cass Patrick of Fulton.

The performance inaugurates the MSU music education department's 1999-2000 Guest Artist Series. Tickets, available at the door, are $5; $3 for MSU faculty, students and staff.

The music scores will include several works by contemporary women composers, as well as a selection of preludes by American composers including Arthur Foote, Robert Muczynski, Charles Griffin, and George Gershwin, among others. Rounding out the program are George Antheil's "Sonata for flute and piano" and Mauro Giuliania's "The Grand Duo concertant, Op. 85."

A member of the AU music faculty, Garrison holds a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a master's from the University of South Carolina and a doctorate from Florida State University.

Stephenson, head of Auburn's music department, is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, where he studied with Mieczslaw Munz and Walter Hautizig. He also has studied with Pedro Vallribera at the Conservatorio del Liceo in Barcelona, Spain.

Patrick is a member of the Itawamba Community College faculty.

Future Guest Artist performances include classical guitarist Michael Boyd, Jan. 18; saxophonist Paul Bro, March 28; and ragtime pianist and former MSU music education department head Jack Oliva, May 1.
