Engineers Week activities feature NASA leader

The top official of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is helping launch National Engineers Week Feb. 21-27 at Mississippi State University.

Administrator Daniel S. Goldin will deliver the opening address at an 11 a.m. public program on the 23rd in the Tully Auditorium of Thompson Hall.

Before becoming NASA head in 1992, Goldin spent 25 years at TRW Space and Technology Group, where he managed the development and production of advanced spacecraft, technologies and space science instruments.

After coming to the space agency, he implemented budgetary reforms, redesigned the space station program and helped inaugurate a new class of planetary probes. A New York City native, he is a mechanical engineering graduate of the City College of New York.

Other major public events during MSU Engineers Week include:

--The Raspet Flight Laboratory's 50th anniversary celebration on Feb. 23 and 24;

--Dedication of the MSU/National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center's new virtual reality facility on the 24th; and

--Tours of the NSF/ERC and the Diagnostic Instrumentation and Analysis Laboratory on the 24th and 25th.
