The geography editor of ABC's morning news show will speak Monday [March 30] at Mississippi State University.
Harm J. de Blij's topic will be "Promise and Peril on the Pacific Rim." The public program begins at 2:30 p.m. in Simrall Hall auditorium.
Since joining "Good Morning America" in 1989, he has appeared regularly from ABC's New York and Washington, D.C., studios, as well as from locations throughout the world. In 1996, he also began a series of appearances on Public Broadcasting Service's "The Power of Place," which is based on one of his books.
An internationally recognized specialist in environmental and geopolitical issues, de Blij is the author of more than 30 works. His latest is "Harm de Blij's Geography Book," a sequel to "Nature on the Rampage," the Smithsonian Institution publication focusing on the threats nature poses to human life and works.
The MSU geosciences department and John Wiley Publishers of New York are co-sponsoring his campus visit.
A native of the Netherlands, de Blij holds a doctorate from Northwestern University. He formerly held Georgetown University's Distinguished Professorship in Political Geography.
In 1993, his work in television earned a share of an Emmy Award from the American Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
