A Mississippi State University senior from Vicksburg is a top winner of a national photography contest.

Garland L. Cary Jr., a graphic design major in the department of art, placed fourth in the color division of the 17th Annual Spring Photography Contest. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Garland L. Cary Sr. and a 1987 Vicksburg High School graduate.

His photograph, "Gwendolyn's Veil," is being published in the 1997 Best of College Photography Annual, published by Serbin Communications of Santa Barbara, Calif. Photographer's Forum magazine and camera manufacturer Nikon sponsor the competition.

Photographs by Mississippi State art students have been included in the publication since 1980.

Cary's entry was among only 18 selected by a national panel of judges from among more than 19,000 submitted this year.

To create the photograph, Cary coated a piece of special paper with a liquid emulsion and exposed the negative to the sensitized paper. He then hand-colored the piece for the desired effect.

"It is a process the students are introduced to in our upper-level photography courses," said Marita Gootee, associate professor of art. "Garland's photograph is exceptional."
