Parkinson's treatment focus of program

A Jackson-based specialist will be featured speaker for an April 26 public program at Mississippi State University on Parkinson's disease.

Dr. George T. Mandybur, assistant professor of neurosurgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, will discuss surgery as a treatment for the degenerative brain condition. A question-and-answer session will follow his presentation.

The 2 p.m. program will be held at the Comprehensive Assistive Technology Center, which adjoins the Longest Student Health Center on Hardy Road.

Mainly affecting people over the age of 50, Parkinson's disease is characterized by a progressive loss of mobility, muscular rigidity, tremor, and speech difficulties.

Mandybur's visit is co-sponsored by the university's vocational rehabilitation counselor training program and the Parkinson's Disease Support Group of Starkville.
