Head of accounting standards board to speak

The national chairman of the Financial Accounting Standards Board will speak Jan. 30 at Mississippi State University.

Dennis R. Beresford of Norwalk, Conn., will deliver the keynote address for the School of Accountancy's 1997 Spring Convocation. The public program at 4:45 p.m. is in the Rogers Auditorium of McCool Hall.

The FASB--or "Fas-Bee," as it's usually referred to by accountants--compiles the financial reporting standards for all companies registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission and which have their stock listed with the various stock exchanges.

"The FASB's work affects anyone who owns stock or has investment or retirement securities," said accounting school director Pierre Titard. "Mr. Beresford will provide an overview of the board's activities and current developments."

A public reception honoring Beresford will take place 6:30-8 p.m. that day at the Main Street branch of Deposit Guaranty National Bank in Starkville.

Before his appointment as board chairman in 1987, Beresford was national director of accounting standards for Ernst & Young, one of the Big Six international accounting and financial services companies.

A graduate of the University of Southern California, he has received several major honors for his leadership in the field. Among them are the Accountant of the Year Award given by the national Beta Alpha Psi accounting fraternity and a literary award presented by the Journal of Accountancy. He also received an honorary doctor of humane letters from DePaul University in Chicago.

Persons planning to attend the reception for Beresford are asked to call (601) 325-3710 in advance.
