Coast student wins scholarship honoring ex-president

A Long Beach senior is the 1996 George Bush Educational Scholar at Mississippi State University.

Erin H. Carte is an elementary education major currently practice teaching at Sudduth Elementary School in Starkville. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Hair and a 1992 Long Beach High School graduate, she is scheduled to complete her undergraduate studies, with honors, in December.

Established in 1989, the Bush Scholarship is a permanent tribute to the United States president who was the university's commencement speaker that year. The annual award covers tuition and fees for the school year.

In letters of recommendation supporting her nomination, Carte is praised for "a dedication and commitment to hard work, a concern for students and their parents, and a willingness to expend herself beyond ordinary expectations."

By virtue of her selection as a Bush Scholar, Carte joins the College of Education Undergraduate Advisory Council. She previously served on the Student Reading Council.

She is a Dean's and President's scholar and a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies.

In addition to activities associated with the College of Education, she has been an Orientation Leader, an Alumni Delegate and a member of the Baptist Student Union.
