Sept. 23-26 are the dates and the Gulf Coast Coliseum is the place for the sixth annual Southern States Environmental Conference.
Organized by the Mississippi State University-based Mississippi Technical Assistance Program (MISSTAP), the regional gathering provides a forum to address a variety of environmental and related issues. Among major topic areas are water, hazardous waste, solid waste, air pollution, and pollution prevention.
The meeting is supported by the environmental agencies of Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, North and South Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
"Our 1996 program, like the previous sessions, will involve the nation's leading environmental professionals," said MISSTAP director Caroline Hill. "For this and other reasons, we consider this to be the South's premier environmental conference."
Also taking part will be state and local officials, officials of business and industry, representatives of environmental organizations, and members of the general public.
"Business and industrial representatives, in particular, can get the latest information on federal and state government policies and regulations, as well as the new technologies," Hill said.
Keynote speakers will include Cam Metcalf, executive director of the Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center in Louisville; Grant Ferrier, president of Environmental Business International of San Diego; and Richard Miller, president of Richard Miller and Associates of Atlanta.
Also on hand will be a wide range of exhibitors from environmentally oriented businesses. Nearly 100 already have announced plans to attend, Hill said.
In addition to MISSTAP, other conference sponsors include the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality's Pollution Prevention Program, Department of Defense Joint Interservice Regional Support Group, Tennessee Valley Authority, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Regions IV and VI of the Environmental Protection Agency.
